Day 57: Sucre

Yesterday, Day 56, I spent exploring the striking scenery of Valle de la Luna (pic, 'Moon Valley'), half an hour's local bus ride outside La Paz. There was nobody else visiting. This was good because I had it all to myself, but meant it lacked atmosphere. Perhaps that's how it got its name.

An overnight bus, with another locked toilet, got me to Sucre. (La Paz is the home of government and commercial centre of Bolivia, but Sucre is the official capital.) The historic centre comprises fine whitewashed colonial buildings which, when they catch the sun (pic), look like they're made from icing sugar. Perhaps that's how it got its name.

Sucre's centre (pic) is lovely and safe to wander round even at night. It's a more relaxed, genteel place than La Paz, which means 'peace'. Given that La Paz is a fairly dodgy place these days, with rising street crime, petty theft and violent robberies, it's clearly not how it got its name.
