Day 21: Mindo to Quito
A 'Birdwatching Breakfast' this morning, half an hour's walk along a dirt road out of Mindo. It was at the rustic home and jungle-garden of Carl and Laura, a couple from Leeds who moved here five years ago. As you sit scoffing your fine full English breakfast (no black pudding though: they can't source it here) you watch dozens of hummingbirds (pic) and toucans at work.
Carl guides you through all the species (around a dozen of hummingbirds alone, pic) and identifies all the other various wildlife that you might see, bump into or tread on. It was a delight to visit them: my favourite Mindo experience.
A bus trip later, I was in Quito, world-famous for its Old Town's high levels of architectural excellence (pic), and of crime.
Obviously, I was more interested in the local bike-hire scheme, BiciQuito (pic), than the colonial churches. Sadly, it's only available for locals. Having risked some of the street food, I wish they had the same restrictions on that.
