Yesterday, Day 32, was an easy day of eating $3 dinners and sipping beers by the beach at Puerto Lopez. An overnight bus got me to Quito – an unwanted return but a necessary one, to book a jungle trip. Its reputation for petty crime was reinforced when the traveller I was with, Talia from Israel, had her wallet pickpocketed on a bus. We spent a couple of hours sorting out international calls to cancel her cards and so on.

I didn't want to hang around; after an evening exploring the safe, police-patrolled entertainment area of Plaza Foch (pic) – it didn't take long, it's only this one square – I got another overnight bus towards the jungle. Another sleepless night, but I was keen to get out of Quito.
