Day 24: Latacunga to Quilotoa

Latacunga is the gateway for the Quilotoa Loop, a circular route through Andean villages. And this is why you spend two hours to the village of Quilotoa on a jam-packed bus, full of locals in trilbies toting luggage sacks the size of a fridge: the magnificent crater-lake (pic).

I walked down to the shore 300m below and admired the canoeists, then laboriously puffed my way back up (we're nearly 4000m high here). Many people took the easy option and got back up to the ridgetop village on donkey- or horseback (pic). Can't say I blame them.
